Keys to Academic Success
Adapting to college can be difficult at times. Here we have compiled a list of key tips for academic success.
Adapt your learning style to each course delivery type
In previous semesters, you have figured out exactly what you needed to do to be successful in an in-person course. Unfortunately, online and hybrid courses are different, and you may need to make some changes to your methods to sustain your classroom success.
Staying on task
Staying on task can be a struggle, especially during online learning. If you struggle to stay on task, try focusing for a block of time (25-50 minutes) and then give yourself a break (5-10 minutes). Try an app like Focus Keeper to keep yourself zoned in while trying to study or complete homework.
Having a dedicated work space can also help you get focused and stay on task.
If you struggle to stay organized, try writing down each task on a to-do list or map out when you will work on each task in a planner.
Create a schedule - and stick to it!
Whether you are attending in-person classes, watching live lectures online or you have the freedom to completely structure your days, be sure to create a schedule for yourself and stick to it! Be sure to include your class schedule, assignment deadlines, exams, time for studying and homework, and don’t forget to include time to relax and de-stress!
Communicate
Building relationships with your professors through regular, effective communication is crucial for your academic success.
Forming these relationships allows you to seek guidance and support if you find yourself struggling at any point during the semester.
Communicating with peers and building a community within your academic program is another great way to achieve academic success. Relationships with your peers provide you the opportunity to collaborate, which could benefit everyone involved.
When it is not appropriate to collaborate and meet in person, take advantage of communication apps, like GroupMe, Slack or Zoom, to communicate with peers.
Motivation
It’s normal to not feel motivated 100 percent of the time. Take advantage of those times that you are feeling extra motivated and get your studying and assignments done. That way you can recharge when you’re not feeling motivated and need a break!
Don't be afraid to ask for help
There are many resources on campus to support you. No matter what you’re struggling with, reach out. The best way to make asking for help easier is to build strong relationships and a good community with your peers and professors. It’s much more difficult to ask for help when you’re not comfortable with the people around you.
