What is landscape management?

Landscape management is the art and science of designing, building and maintaining landscapes of all sizes. You will learn to draw, map and creatively plan outdoor spaces for homes, businesses and communities.

Why landscape management?

The professional landscape industry is broad, with a wide variety of specialists whose work plays an important role in the health, well-being, and beauty of the landscapes we enjoy. From irrigation support and GPS tracking, to sonograms on trees and computer-aided-design, technology is essential in helping industry professionals.

Career paths

At the current time, there are more jobs available in the landscape management field than there are graduates to fill them. About 60,000 professional-level positions need to be filled this year. Students who desire a career in the landscape industry and are willing to learn a company culture likely will not struggle to find employment prior to graduation from OSU.

Fast fact

In landscape management, your learning experience will be hands-on, and include field-based classes and laboratory experiences. For example, you will work on real-world landscape designs in design studios, and when enrolled in the arboriculture class, meet weekly with industry professionals to discuss various tree care procedures.

Real-world experience

Hands-on laboratories are included in many courses. You will have the unique advantage of utilizing the Greenhouse Learning Center, The Botanic Garden at OSU, and the Water Conservation and Irrigation Training Center. All students in the department are also required to complete an internship prior to graduation.
