What is event management?

Event management is a fast-paced and exciting industry that involves designing, planning, organizing and coordinating events ranging from small to mega events, such as concerts, festivals, sporting events, trade shows, meetings, conferences, conventions and exhibitions. Successful event managers have a broad range of skills including communication, contract negotiation, organizations, customer service, human resources, budgeting, creativity, relationship management and leadership.
 

Why event management at OSU?

This minor is open to all majors and provides students with the essential skills, competencies and industry knowledge that will put them at the forefront of this fast-growing and rapidly changing industry.  The curriculum (15 credit hours) focuses on topics such as:
  • Event and meeting design, strategy & planning
  • Live entertainment and production
  • Marketing, promotions and sponsorships
  • Sales, service, and hospitality management
  • Budgeting and fiscal management
  • Risk assessment and facilities management

 

Coursework

The Event Management Minor consists of 15 credit hours.

Required courses (9 credit hours)

  • HTM 3123: Event Planning
  • HTM 3663: Food and Beverages in Events
  • HTM 4983: Conventions, Conferences and Meetings

Select 6 hours of any HTM (Hospitality and Tourism Management) classes.

  • A combination of HTM 3120 or HTM 4120 is recommended to attain hands-on event design, planning and production experience.

Career opportunities are available across multiple sectors including music, festivals, sport, fashion, attractions and entertainment, as well as within corporations or government. Potential jobs include:
