A Year in Review: 2021‑2022


Highlights from President Shrum's first year in office

 


Recruitment


  • 1% increase in year-over-year enrollment

  • Nearly 20% of the 2021 freshman class are first-generation students.

  • 4,267 total fall 2021 freshman students, the largest class in eight years

  • Online undergraduate enrollment numbers set a new record this spring, up 65% from spring 2021 (507 students) to spring 2022 (839 students) and up 366% from spring 2020 (180 students) to spring 2022 (839 students).

  • Tripled concurrent high school student enrollment in the past three years to 286 in fall 2021 — up from 90 students in fall 2018.

  • OSU Stillwater posted record-setting honors program enrollment in fall 2021 with nearly 900 students. An honors award program was developed specifically for students on the OSU-Tulsa campus.

  • Year-over-year undergraduate transfer student enrollment increased by 19.5% from fall 2020 to fall 2021, rising from 1,340 to 1,601 students, respectively. A newly launched transfer equivalency self-service program allows students to see how credits will transfer immediately by degree program.

  • Increased fall 2021 enrollment to 24,660 — up year-over-year by 255 students.
  • Record-setting diversity numbers for fall 2021 with 30% (7,400) representing historically underserved and underrepresented students.

 

Fundraising


  • A combined $50 million gift was secured to launch the Hamm Institute for American Energy at Oklahoma State University in OKC’s Innovation District.

  • Total philanthropic funds for the year surpassed $184 million — the largest single-year giving total in OSU history outside of a fundraising campaign involving a significant lead gift from beloved OSU Alumnus and Cowboy legend Boone Pickens.

Teaching


  • OSU graduation rates had a record high year with the four-year graduation rate up to 49% and the six- year graduation rate at 65.7%. The fall 2017 cohort (four-year) included 1,856 of 3,791 students. The six-year fall 2015 cohort included 2,587 of 3,940 students.

  • OSUIT posts the highest graduation rate of all community colleges in Oklahoma: 41%.

 

Research


  • $10M in research funding secured in September 2021 — the highest month in OSU history.

  • Tier 1 — OSU maintains Carnegie top-tier research university designation.

 

Extension


  • Through our staff in all 77 counties across the state, area specialists and state specialists, OSU Extension had over 400,000 face-to-face contacts where our educators and specialists provided practical, research-based information for improving lives and communities.

  • In the past 12 months, the Extension site has been visited 3.2 million times. OSU Fact Sheets continue to be heavily utilized by Oklahomans, with 47% year-on-year growth in online usage. The Oklahoma Garden Planning Guide fact sheet was the most popular publication, viewed 58,000 times in the last year.

  • More than 128,600 Oklahoma youth participated in 4-H programs in 2021.


Strengthening Cowboy Culture

 

Forming Ideal Graduates


 

  • 94% (3,997) of all first-time, full-time OSU students took part in three or more programs offered by the Division of Student Affairs in fall 2021 — an increase of 756.

  • 91% (16,777) of all OSU students took part in a Student Affairs program or event during fall 2021 — an increase of 1,124.

  • 30% of freshmen in the fall 2021 class are minority students, making it the most diverse class in school history.

 

Competing on the Field


  • Fiesta Bowl champions

  • National championship for equestrian team 

  • Big 12 Tournament title for Cowgirl softball

  • Back-to-back national championships for the OSU cheer team, marking their fifth title in the last decade.

  • Cowgirl tennis made it to the Sweet 16 for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.

  • Cade Cunningham becomes the first Cowboy basketball player to be selected No. 1 overall in the NBA Draft. 

  • OSU among national leaders for implementation of Name, Image, Likeness (NIL), programs aimed at helping student athletes maximize opportunities. 

 


Academic Advancements

OSU continues to pursue strategic initiatives for system-wide projects aimed at maximizing OSU’s impact in key areas, including human performance and nutrition, STEM education, aerospace and pharmaceutical drug development. Here are a few highlights from each area: 

 

Health


  • 15.5% year-to-year increase in CHS enrollment

  • OSU’s National Center for Wellness and Recovery establishes innovative partnership with the University of Arizona to combat the opioid crisis.

  • OSU-CHS ready to launch doctorate of health care administration program in fall 2022.

  • OSU-CHS secured $120 million from the federal government to construct a 58-bed med surg VA hospital in downtown Tulsa. The project has raised $10 million in private funding to support its mission.

  • A design architect has been selected and the conceptual design process has been completed for the new mental health hospital in Tulsa. 

  • A graduate medical education committee has been established to work on the 100 new residency slots — 50 at the new VA hospital and 50 at the mental health hospital.

  • OSU-CHS has secured funding from the City of Tulsa and Tulsa County for a new parking garage.

  • OSU Medical Center has experienced record growth. Compared to the previous year, admissions are up 19.7%, births are up 35.5%, ER visits are up 24.7% and surgeries are up 35.3%. 

  • OSU-CHS sets a new fundraising record, raising $20.7 million in one year.

  • OSU Medicine entered a joint venture with the Regional Brain Institute to provide virtual stroke coverage to rural hospitals.

  • OSU Medicine launched Emergency Medicine Coverage (24/7) at Stilwell Memorial Hospital.

 

Aerospace


  • Launched the Oklahoma Aerospace Institute for Research and Education (OAIRE), cementing OSU as the aerospace leader in the state.

  • Celebrated grand opening of the new Ray and Linda Booker OSU Flight Center.

  • Secured nearly $500,000 in federal grant funding for aviation maintenance training pipeline.

     

Agriculture


  • The groundbreaking for New Frontiers Agricultural Hall was held April 23, 2021. Thanks to the investment of more than 590 donors, the total fundraising goal of $50 million is on track to be reached before the start of the fall semester.

  • Researchers have submitted seven invention disclosures this year and had two patents issued along with five plant variety protection certificates. As of March 2022, royalties from intellectual property have paid $2.4 million.

  • The top eight wheat varieties sown in Oklahoma in 2022 are varieties developed by Wheat Improvement Team scientists at OSU.

  • The Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources completed a national search in 2021 resulting in the hire of Dr. Scott Senseman, associate vice president for the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station. Since then, the university has completed national searches for new department heads in entomology and plant pathology and in animal and food sciences.

 

Energy


  • Established Hamm Institute for American Energy at Oklahoma State University.

  • In April 2022, Kenneth Wagner was named inaugural executive director of the Hamm Institute for American energy at Oklahoma State University.

 

STEM


  • Secured $6 million DOD grant for STEM education programs for schools with economically disadvantaged or underrepresented students.

  • Raised more than $5 million for student scholarships to support education majors.
