our Ph.D. students.
Students take classes for the first two years of the program followed by comprehensive
exams. In the third or fourth year students prepare and defend a dissertation proposal.
The dissertation is typically defended in the fifth year of the program. Students
continue to work as research assistants throughout the program and will teach a small
number of classes.
