Get certified in mathematics

Whether as a supplement to another degree or as a standalone educational achievement, getting certified in mathematics is a great way to boost your career prospects and further your professional development. OSU’s mathematics graduate certificate is a perfect addition to many different degree plans, especially those in education or STEM-related disciplines. Our program offers a variety of suggested course bundles for students looking to enhance the mathematics skills most relevant to their interests.

Overview

This graduate certificate program provides supplemental training in mathematics to students in a wide range of programs including engineering, education, statistics and computer science. The critical thinking and problem-solving skills developed while studying graduate level mathematics are highly valued by employers in industry and government. This certificate program can also help students satisfy the Higher Learning Commission requirement that teachers of undergraduate classes have 18 hours of graduate course work in their given discipline.

Coursework

The program requires 12 hours of graduate credit math courses (courses numbered 5000 or above). No thesis hours (Math 5000 or Math 6000) can count towards this total. Students have the flexibility to craft a plan of study that best suits their career goals. The following are some suggested plans of study:

Statistics:

  • MATH 5023: Advanced Linear Algebra
  • MATH 5043: Advanced Calculus I
  • MATH 5053: Advanced Calculus II
  • MATH 5143: Real Analysis

Mathematics Education:

  • MATH 5003: Modern Algebra I
  • MATH 5083: Intermediate Analysis
  • MATH 5903: Seminar and Practicum in the Teaching of College Mathematics
  • MATH 5913: Introduction to Research in Mathematics Education

Students interested in meeting Higher Learning Commission requirements could add:

  • MATH 5423: Geometry and Algorithms in Three-Dimensional Modeling
  • MATH 5673: Combinatorics

Applied Mathematics:

  • MATH 5023: Advanced Linear Algebra
  • MATH 5513: Numerical Analysis
  • MATH 5543: Numerical Analysis for Differential Equations
  • MATH 5553: Numerical Analysis for Linear Algebra

No more than three credit hours from the following course list can count toward the certificate’s completion:

  • MATH 5033: History of Mathematics
  • MATH 5073: Introduction to Analysis
  • MATH 5083: Intermediate Analysis
  • MATH 5203: Intermediate Differential Equations
  • MATH 5263: Introduction to Partial Differential Equations
  • MATH 5273: Complex Variables
  • MATH 5343: Introduction to Topology
  • MATH 5423: Geometry and Algorithms in Three-Dimensional Modeling
  • MATH 5453 Mathematical Interest Theory
  • MATH 5503 Introduction to Optimization
  • MATH 5513 Numerical Analysis
  • MATH 5673 Combinatorics
  • MATH 5713 Number Theory
  • MATH 5753 Introduction to Cryptography
  • MATH 5803 Groups and Representations

If a student elects to take more than 12 hours, then the additional classes may be from the list above. No more than three hours can be transferred from another university. Credits must be transferrable to OSU.

Admissions Requirements and Deadlines

Applicants are required to have a bachelor’s degree. Applicants should have proficiency in undergraduate mathematics beyond elementary integral calculus, and their transcripts should include proof-based math classes. In particular, undergraduate courses in linear algebra, abstract algebra and real analysis are strongly recommended.
