Get certified as an elementary mathematics specialist

This program is designed for those who already hold initial teacher certification and desire to complete requirements for the elementary mathematics specialist add-on certification through the Oklahoma State Department of Education.

Overview

Sharpen your skills in teaching topics ranging from algebra to spatial visualization and probability. Successful completion of this certificate program requires 18 credit hours (six courses) of graduate-level coursework. While some may already hold a master's degree, certificate credit hours are transferable to the following master's program:

Coursework

This program is offered fully online as well as in-person on the OSU-Stillwater campus. Online courses are delivered through Canvas, OSU's online learning platform. We facilitate peer-to-peer collaboration and community building using technology. Each of these courses are tied directly to the Oklahoma State Department of Education Elementary Mathematics Specialist standards.

 

Required (18 credit hours):

  • SMED 5253: Teaching Rational Number Concepts, Proportional Reasoning and Classroom Interactions
  • SMED 5273: Number Concepts and Assessment at the Elementary Level (PK-6)
  • SMED 5913: Teaching Geometry and Spatial Visualization
  • SMED 5923: Teaching Algebra and Mathematical Tasks
  • SMED 5933: Teaching Data and Probability in Schools
  • SMED 5943: Mathematics Leadership and Coaching (includes a minimum of 30 hours of field experience)

Admissions Requirements and Deadlines

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants will be notified of admission status within four to six weeks of submission.

 

To apply for the program, submit the following:

  • Graduate College application
  • Transcripts from all previously attended institutions (undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a minimum 3.0 GPA required; admission with qualifications may be considered)
  • Goal statement
  • Academic vita/resume
  • Current teaching certificate
