OSU's third annual Student Satisfaction Survey
How satisfied are students with the quality of teaching at Oklahoma State University? How about safety and security on campus? These were two of the 27 questions that more than 8,000 students from the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses answered earlier this year as part of the third annual OSU Student Satisfaction Survey. The survey gathers student feedback in academics, campus life, campus services and diversity to improve student experiences and services.
88.8%of students reported feeling very satisfied
with health and fitness services provided by OSU.

Here are some of the findings.
Top 10 questions that received “very satisfied” or “satisfied” ratings:
- Your safety and security on the OSU campus - 89.2% (87.5% in 2019) (85.4% in 2018)
- OSU health and fitness services – 88.8% (88.6% in 2019) (78.5% in 2018)
- Being a student at OSU – 87.8% (86.9% in 2019) (85.9% in 2018)
- Your intellectual growth at OSU – 87.2% (84.7% in 2019) (86.9% in 2018)
- OSU library services – 86.8% (87.3% in 2019) (82.8% in 2018)
- Availability of OSU faculty – 83.8% (83.1% in 2019) (82.3% in 2018)
- Pete’s Pet Posse at OSU – 83.7% (83.2% in 2019) (Not listed in 2018)
- The quality of teaching at OSU – 83.2% (82.6% in 2019) (83.6% in 2018)
- The variety of activities for students at OSU – 82.3% (81.8% in 2019) (79.2% in 2018)
- OSU course registration process – 78.8% (75.2% in 2019) (Not listed in 2018)
Top three questions that received “dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” ratings:
- Parking availability at OSU – 63.5% (63.8% in 2019) (58.6% in 2018)
- OSU food and dining options – 20.4% (21.2% in 2019) (16.4% in 2018)
- OSU financial aid received – 20.4% (20.6% in 2019) (15.3% in 2018)
More than 60 percent of students reported that access to parking was what they were most dissatisfied with. Steve Spradling, director of parking and transportation services, said he and his team advocate for students and are continually looking for additional parking options on campus.
Spradling did add that OSU has enough parking spaces and that permits are affordable
when compared with other Big 12 schools.
“We’ve got plenty of parking – it just can’t all be next to the building,” he said.
The university has more than 16,000 parking spaces for the roughly 30,000 students
and staff. Annual permits start at $77 for a park and ride option and $131 for lot
parking.
All 22,498 students on the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses were invited to participate in the survey between March 5 and April 14, 2019 and 8,203 – 36.5 percent (up from 34 percent last year) – completed all the questions and were included in the final figures.
They rated their degree of satisfaction from very satisfied, satisfied, neutral, dissatisfied to very dissatisfied.
Students were also asked one open-ended question.
“What additional information would you like OSU to know?” — which received 2,337 comments.
Here are some of the student responses:
“I appreciate the hard work that the OSU staff goes through to make campus a beautiful, fun, and welcoming place. Many schools are not the same and this makes OSU stick out.”
• “Studying abroad is made so easy and affordable. Thank you!”
• “I feel that it should be easier to receive counseling on campus. It seems like
there is not enough availability/counselors. Mental health is important.”
• “I think it would be nice for Top 10 freshman to get a scholarship of some type.”
• “I've had three different academic advisors in my two years of being here, they
have all been wonderful but I just wish I had a constant advisor.”
• “Include more career fairs of other departments like veterinary science.”
• “I adore the OSU community, I have the sense of belonging and have loved my past
three years on campus! It has been a truly incredible time (and I) cannot wait to
make more memories my last year on campus! Go pokes!”
• “I believe that OSU could do more for supporting diversity and gender/LGBTQIA+ inclusion.
I would suggest reaching out to multicultural and LGBTQIA+ clubs and groups and asking
them for ideas and how to support them on campus.”
• “The community is great. The people are great and I feel very safe on campus.”
• “As an international graduate student, I am very satisfied with the level of diversity,
inclusion and equal opportunity provided by OSU.”
• “I'm an online student and so far I love the experience! The coursework is flexible,
affordable, and valuable to my career!”

OSU's Student Engagement Survey pilot study
How engaged are students with attending classes at Oklahoma State University? How about their ability to determine their learning goals? These were two of the 25 questions that more than 8,000 students from the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses answered earlier this year as part of the OSU Student Engagement Survey pilot study. The survey was developed to measure concepts regarding overall OSU student engagement experience at OSU: academic effort; higher order learning, interaction, supportive environment and involvement.
85%of students reported feeling comfortable
being themselves at OSU.
Here are some of the findings.
Top 10 questions that received “always and often engaged” ratings:
- I attend my classes at OSU – 96.9%
- I spend enough time and make enough effort to learn at OSU - 92.8%
- I do my best regarding my responsibilities in group work at OSU - 92.7%
- I motivate myself to learn at OSU - 91.8%
- I feel safe on the OSU campus - 90.4%
- I try to be open to learning things that could potentially change the way I understand an issue or concept at OSU - 90.2%
- Overall, I feel good about being at OSU - 90.1%
- I am easily able to work with classmates from different backgrounds and cultures than my own at OSU - 88.5%
- I determine my learning goals at OSU - 86.0%
- I am comfortable being myself at OSU - 85.0%
Top three questions that received “rarely” or “never engaged” ratings:
I discuss course topics, ideas, or concepts with an OSU professor outside of class – 30.7%
I participate is OSU campus events – 24.5%
I talk about my career plans with career services, faculty, or advisors at OSU – 19%
OSU Career Services assists students with their resume and cover letters, networking and interview skills,
and much more.
Students were also asked one open-ended question.
“What additional information would you like OSU to know?” — which received 2,337 comments.
Here are some of the student responses:

“The staff and faculty in the English department are excellent! They go out of their way to make students feel comfortable, supported and academically and professionally ready for life beyond the degree. They are the biggest reason I'm grateful to be a student at OSU.”
• “I believe that an important part of the investment we make in college is the people.
I learn a lot in my classes but I am very thankful for professors and classmates that
truly want to see me succeed and will do what they can to help. I also love how intertwined
the classes are in Spears specifically. It's much easier to learn a concept when you
see it from multiple perspectives in the same week.”
• “My Residential Life experience was one of the best of my life. I am extremely satisfied with how many new people I met, how many friends I made and how much fun I had while furthering my education.”
• “I am a member of a sorority and my decision to participate in sorority recruitment
did affect my decision to come to OSU. I knew that the Panhellenic system here was
well-run and would most likely be a positive experience and I was not disappointed.”
All 22,023 students on the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses were invited to participate in the survey between February 20 and April 12, 2020 and 8,010 – or 36.3 percent – completed all the questions and were included in the final figures.
They rated their engagement experience at OSU from always, often, sometimes, rarely
to never.
