OSU's Student Satisfaction and Engagement Survey

How satisfied are students with the quality of teaching at Oklahoma State University? How often do students motivate themselves to learn at OSU? These were two of the 30 questions that more than 5,000 students from the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses answered earlier this year as part of the OSU Student Satisfaction and Engagement Survey. The survey gathers student feedback in academics, campus life and campus services to improve student experiences and services.

 

All 25,172 students on the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses were invited to participate in the survey between March 24 and May 4, 2025 and 5,571 – or 26.2 percent – completed all the questions and were included in the final figures.


86.4%of students reported

feeling some level of satisfaction with their intellectual growth at OSU.

95.6%of students reported

spending enough time and making enough effort to learn at OSU.

Here are some of the findings.

They rated their engagment experience at OSU from always, often, sometimes, rarely to never.

The topmost "engaged" items were:

(participants chose "always" or "often")

  • 96.7% – Doing their best regarding their responsibilities in group work at OSU
  • 96.6% – Attending their OSU classes
  • 95.6% – Spend enough time and make enough effort to learn at OSU
  • 92.2% – Motivate themselves to learn at OSU
  • 90.6% – Feel safe on the OSU campus

 

The topmost "disengaged" items were:

(participants chose "rarely" or never")

  • 33.1% – Discussing course topics, ideas or concepts with an OSU professor outside of class
  • 24.7% – Talking about career plans with career services, faculty or advisors at OSU
  • 22.6% – Asking other students to help in understanding course material at OSU

 

Students rated being the most involved with:

  • 63.0% – OSU student groups or groups in the community
  • 55.7% – Field experience  (e.g., internship, part-time job, student teaching, clinical placement, or other field experience) while at OSU
  • 55.5% – Community-based projects (e.g., volunteering) while studying at OSU

 

Top three questions that received “very satisfied” or “satisfied” ratings:

  • 86.4% – Intellectual Growth at OSU
  • 85.6% – Quality of teaching at OSU
  • 85.6% – Availability of OSU faculty

 

Top three questions that received “dissatisfied” or “very dissatisfied” ratings:

  • 13.7% – Availability of courses needed for your degree program at OSU
  • 7.0% – Sense of belonging at OSU
  • 5.9% – Feedback about your academic progress at OSU

 

Students were also asked one open-ended question.

What additional information would you like OSU to know about your involvement with OSU and the surrounding community? What else would you like OSU to know about your overall experience at OSU?” — which received 2,104 comments.

 

Here are some of the student responses:

•“The faculty are really amazing and deserve to be recognized more for their amazing contributions to OSU and its community.”

 
• “OSU has provided me with a safe environment to further my education.”

 
• “I love OSU landscape!!! It's so refreshing to go outside and see nature while studying/stressing out about school. I really appreciate the time and effort y'all put into outdoors!!!”

OSU's Student Engagement Survey pilot study

How engaged are students with attending classes at Oklahoma State University? How about their ability to determine their learning goals? These were two of the 25 questions that more than 8,000 students from the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses answered earlier this year as part of the OSU Student Engagement Survey pilot study. The survey was developed to measure concepts regarding overall OSU student engagement experience at OSU: academic effort; higher order learning, interaction, supportive environment and involvement.

being themselves at OSU.

Top 10 questions that received “always and often engaged” ratings:

  • I attend my classes at OSU – 96.9%
  • I spend enough time and make enough effort to learn at OSU - 92.8%
  • I do my best regarding my responsibilities in group work at OSU - 92.7%
  • I motivate myself to learn at OSU - 91.8%
  • I feel safe on the OSU campus - 90.4%
  • I try to be open to learning things that could potentially change the way I understand an issue or concept at OSU - 90.2%
  • Overall, I feel good about being at OSU - 90.1%
  • I am easily able to work with classmates from different backgrounds and cultures than my own at OSU - 88.5%
  • I determine my learning goals at OSU - 86.0%
  • I am comfortable being myself at OSU - 85.0%

Top three questions that received “rarely” or “never engaged” ratings:

I discuss course topics, ideas, or concepts with an OSU professor outside of class – 30.7%

I participate is OSU campus events – 24.5%

I talk about my career plans with career services, faculty, or advisors at OSU – 19%


OSU Career Services assists students with their resume and cover letters, networking and interview skills, and much more.

 

Students were also asked one open-ended question.


“What additional information would you like OSU to know?” — which received 2,337 comments.
 
Here are some of the student responses:
  • “The staff and faculty in the English department are excellent! They go out of their way to make students feel comfortable, supported and academically and professionally ready for life beyond the degree. They are the biggest reason I'm grateful to be a student at OSU.”

 
• “I believe that an important part of the investment we make in college is the people. I learn a lot in my classes but I am very thankful for professors and classmates that truly want to see me succeed and will do what they can to help. I also love how intertwined the classes are in Spears specifically. It's much easier to learn a concept when you see it from multiple perspectives in the same week.”

 

• “My Residential Life experience was one of the best of my life. I am extremely satisfied with how many new people I met, how many friends I made and how much fun I had while furthering my education.”

 
• “I am a member of a sorority and my decision to participate in sorority recruitment did affect my decision to come to OSU. I knew that the Panhellenic system here was well-run and would most likely be a positive experience and I was not disappointed.”

 

All 22,023 students on the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses were invited to participate in the survey between February 20 and April 12, 2020 and 8,010 – or 36.3 percent – completed all the questions and were included in the final figures.


They rated their engagement experience at OSU from always, often, sometimes, rarely to never.
