Doctorate in Learning, Design and Technology

The PhD in Learning, Design and Technology is designed to educate scholars with a deep understanding and ability to create and apply knowledge of learning, design, and technology in scholarly communities in order to advance education at the national and international level. Our graduates are applying their degrees primarily in higher education positions (faculty, administrators and instructional design specialist), medical education (faculty and instructional design specialists). Graduates have also brought their deep theoretical knowledge to positions in non-profit organizations, tribal education (program development and online learning) and software companies (training and implementation).

Curriculum

This research degree integrates instructional design, online teaching, effects of technology on cognition and learning and design-based research with emerging technology and creativity. The program requires 60 hours of coursework:

  • Common Core — 12 hours
  • Research Courses — 12 hours
  • Specialization — 21 hours 
  • Dissertation — 15 hours

Research and Faculty

Our expert faculty have served as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on over $55 million in grants and cooperative agreements, including projects funded by the National Science Foundation, NASA and John Legend's The Show Me Campaign

 

You will have opportunities to collaborate with faculty and companies to provide access to emerging tools and improve the design and evaluation of commercial tools, present at national conferences, develop learning applications and interventions and engage in authentic problem solving.

Admissions

Applications to the program are considered twice per year with the following deadlines:

  • January 15 — Fall Priority | July 1 — Fall Final 
  • September 15 — Spring Priority | December 1 — Spring Final

 

To apply to the PhD in Learning, Design and Technology program, complete the following: 

  • Graduate College application
  • Transcripts from all previously attended institutions (3.5 minimum graduate GPA required)
  • Current resume/vita
  • Statement of professional goals
  • Three letters of recommendation 
  • Scholarly writing sample 
  • A master’s degree in a related field
  • Response to the Analytical Writing prompt provided in the application system or by contacting penny.thompson@okstate.edu

Cost & Assistance

Graduate assistantships, which provide a monthly stipend as well as tuition and health insurance, are rare but occasionally available on a highly competitive basis. Students interested in applying for an assistantship through the learning, design and technology program should include a statement in their Statement of Professional Goals indicating that they are interested in assistantships. All applicants who apply by the priority deadline and indicate an interest will be considered for any assistantships that might be available.

 

Currently enrolled students are also eligible for scholarships offered through the College of Education and Human Sciences.
