What is landscape architecture?

Landscape architects design gardens, urban plazas, streetscapes, parks, resorts, trails, golf courses, subdivisions and more. You will learn to develop detailed landscape plans that are aesthetically pleasing, functional and compatible with the built and natural environment.

Why landscape architecture at OSU?

As a landscape architecture student at OSU, you will play a critical role in the design of outdoor space for the health, safety and well-being of individuals and their communities. The design process involves creative expression that comes from an understanding of the landscape context, natural systems, cultural systems and social dynamics. You will learn to interpret, imagine, draw, conceptualize, synthesize and construct project ideas that transform the landscape and our communities.

Within landscape architecture, you will have the opportunity to take a variety of classes that cover subjects including:

Landscape Architecture Design Studios
Exposes you to principles and theory of landscape architectural design. Exploration of the design process, in both 2D and 3D form. Apply skills to a range of scales and topics including site design, park design, planting design, urban design and sustainable design.

Landscape Construction Methods
Examines applications in site grading, managing stormwater runoff, construction materials and methods, and the development of construction detail drawings.

Ecological Landscape Design
Examines principles of ecological landscape design, natural systems and landscape performance. You will examine the natural, cultural and aesthetic components involved in analyzing a site for design and planning.

Professional Practice & Office Procedure
Prepares you for employment in a landscape architecture firm by examining business ethics, office practices and procedure.

Professional standards

In landscape architecture, you will have over 100 interactions with industry professionals prior to graduation. This includes portfolio reviews, office visits and a design workshop where you will work beside professionals to develop design concepts.

OSU has the only accredited undergraduate landscape architecture program in the state. Accreditation assures employers that when you graduate, you’ll be prepared to meet industry professional standards.

Real-world experience

Hands-on learning is integrated in many courses, including real-world, community-based design projects, construction labs, active learning at The Botanic Garden at OSU, and tours of built works and professional offices. While all students are required to complete a summer internship, many students take the opportunity to complete a long-term six-month internship while earning credit toward graduation.
