Master's in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Curriculum
The OSU Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s master’s degree program has two options that are available: a “thesis” option is focused on independent research, and our “non-thesis” option specifically targets extensive technical training and professional skills. Both are designed to give students state-of-the-art training, and to enhance critical thinking, scientific communication and leadership skills.
Thesis Option
The thesis option requires a total of 30 credit hours with 24 credit hours of course work, six credit hours of research and passing a final oral examination covering the thesis and related material.
Non-Thesis Option
A non-thesis degree is also available. This option requires a total of 32 credit hours with 30 credit hours course work and two credit hours research. The degree requires three semesters of two credit hour laboratory rotations for extensive technical training in the laboratory, and a final report demonstrating understanding and mastery of the techniques, and interpretation of the experimental outcomes. The non-thesis MS degree is not recommended for students wishing to subsequently pursue a PhD degree. An intensive accelerated non-thesis master’s degree option is possible in one year for highly motivated professionals.

Admissions
To apply for the biochemistry and molecular biology graduate degree program submit an application for admission to the OSU Graduate College including:
- Official transcript(s)
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
- School Code: 6546, Department Code: 0202
- TOEFL scores (if applicable): 79 internet based test (iBT) or 6.5 on the IELTS
- Curriculum vitae or résumé
- Personal statement of explaining why you are interested in the graduate program
- Three letters of reference (must be submitted electronically)
Cost and Assistance
Most students accepted into the department’s MS (thesis-option) program are supported by graduate research or teaching assistantships. Assistantships come with a full wavier of tuition, and generous University supplement for health insurance. In addition to graduate assistantships, our graduate students can compete for departmental, college and University scholarships and awards.
