Master's in Animal Science
Curriculum
The master's degree in animal science may be earned by one of three plans of study specified below.
Thesis Option
The thesis option requires 30 credit hours consisting of 24 hours of course work and six hours of research with a grade of "SR."
Report Option
The report option requires 32 credit hours, consisting of 30 hours of course work and two hours of research with a grade of "SR."
Creative Component Option
The creative component does not include a thesis or report. It requires 32 credit hours of course work, including the creative component. The creative component may be a special report, an annotated bibliography, a project in research or design, or other creative activity, as designated by the advisory committee.
Research and Faculty
The Department of Animal and Food Sciences at Oklahoma State University is home to 15+ facilities encompassing more than 13,000 acres. The units house quality livestock that are used for teaching, research, and Extension purposes.
The OSU Department of Animal and Food Sciences strives to develop life-long learners who understand science, can think creatively and analytically, treat others with honesty and respect, and are prepared to serve and lead the animal and food industries with confidence. The department's teaching facilities allow students to gain hands-on experience and apply concepts learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios, whether in class or as a student employee.
Admissions
Admission to the graduate program requires a bachelor's degree in animal science, dairy science or poultry science, or in closely-related biological sciences or biochemistry. A student enrolling in a degree program must have been accepted by an advisor prior to official admission. In all cases, the student’s graduate advisor or committee may recognize specific undergraduate deficiencies and require measures to attain proficiency.
To apply for the animal science graduate degree program complete the following:
- Submit an application for admission to the OSU Graduate College
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
- Curriculum vitae or résumé
- Personal statement explaining why you are interested in the graduate program
- Three letters of reference
Cost and Assistance
Many students help finance graduate education through part-time, paid employment as a graduate assistant. As a graduate assistant, you can expand and apply your knowledge and skills under the supervision of faculty or staff.
