Curriculum
A PhD student may enter the program in two ways, either (1) with a BS degree to pursue a PhD degree without obtaining an MS degree, or (2) with a MS degree. Depending on how you enter the program will determine what your course requirements are.
Research and Faculty
Dr. Heather Fahlenkamp, professor in chemical engineering is part of a research team who received a four-year, $2.16 million federal grant to investigate the causes of respiratory syncytial virus or RSV, a virus that often strikes young children. Fahlenkamp developed a 3D cell model that can mimic a human lung. By introducing immune cells from infants and adults into the model, researchers can learn what differences occur at the point of infection.
Admissions
The graduate faculty in the School of Chemical Engineering consider a variety of factors when making an admission recommendation. Academic background (e.g., the degree program and specific courses you have taken as an undergraduate), test scores (e.g., GRE, TOEFL), and Statement of Background and Goals, describing any prior research experience (e.g., undergraduate research, completed graduate degrees) and research interests will all be considered.
- Application deadlines are January 15 for the fall semester and July 15 for the spring semester.
- An undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from anABET accredited program. Students with undergraduate degrees in other engineering disciplines or closely-related fields (chemistry, physics, mathematics, biological sciences, etc.) are also invited to apply and will be evaluated on an individual basis and extra course work may be required.
- GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) is preferred. Equivalent credentials are required from an international university.
- GRE scores are not required for students with an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from an ABET accredited, domestic program. Otherwise, a minimum of 160 Quantitative score is preferred.
- English Language Proficiency: For international students, a minimum TOEFL score of 79 or IELTS score of 6.5 is preferred.
