Get certified in teacher development, conflict transformation and compassionate education

This graduate certificate is designed for teachers across disciplines, from K–12 through higher education, as well as community-based educators seeking to cultivate capacities for conflict transformation and compassionate education. The program supports the well-being and peacebuilding capabilities of both educators and students, addresses conflicts and trauma, and fosters individual growth and broader social transformation.

Overview

This program prepares you to become educators and leaders who practice both self-compassion and compassion for others to create nonviolent environments beneficial for both teachers’ professional growth and student success.

Successful completion of this certificate program requires 12 credit hours (four courses) of graduate-level coursework in curriculum studies. These credit hours are transferable to MS and PhD degree programs in curriculum studies:

Teaching, Learning and Leadership, MS

Curriculum and Leadership Studies Curriculum Studies, PhD

Coursework

Courses are delivered in Stillwater and Tulsa, both in person and online.

Required (three credit hours):

  • CIED 5823: Mindfulness, Curriculum and Teaching OR
  • CIED 6153: Curriculum of Nonviolence

Electives (nine credit hours - select three of the following):

  • CIED 5453 Infusing Aesthetics Across the Curriculum
  • CIED 5723 Gender and Curriculum
  • CIED 5873 Place as Curriculum Wisdom
  • CIED 5563 Learning and Living the Wisdom of Peace
  • CIED 6173 International Peace Curriculum Development
  • CIED 5533 Writing as Peace Process: Healing Practices, Genre Awareness, and Educational Renewal
  • CPSY 5503 Multicultural Counseling
  • GWST 5913 Gender, Violence and Justice

  • POLS 5253 Conflict Management and Peacebuilding
  • SOC 5493 Seminar in Environmental Justice

Admissions Requirements and Deadlines

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis in the Fall and Spring semesters. Summer admission is not available. Applicants will be notified of admission status within four to six weeks of submission.

To apply for the program, submit the following:

  • Graduate College application
  • Transcripts from all previously attended institutions (undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a minimum 3.0 GPA required; admission with qualifications may be considered)
  • Academic vita/resume
  • Personal goal statement (approx. 500 words)
